Behind the tour
Valparaíso as the oldest harbor of Chile have many secrets and in this park you will discover some of them. Nevertheless to get to the park we have to cross the biggest hill of Valparaíso “Cerro Playa Ancha” (wide beach hill) a hill with the local athletic stadium where the oldest football club from Chile play, where the biggest University district is located and with the perfect picture of the real Valparaíso.
About Quebrada Verde, first of all the park was donated to be a public space by Federico Santa Maria a businessman and philanthropist who gave all his fortune to the city of Valparaíso and as a gift he created “Federico Santa Maria Technical University” currently the most important Technical University in Chile. The park is located on the edge of the city just slightly behind where the houses from Valparaíso finish so there is a super interesting transition from the city to nature and how are the suburbs of Valparaíso the real face of most of the people who live there. The natural side of the park will show us and endemic forest called sclerophyllous and here we will find typical flora from the central coast of Chile with trees like Boldo, Quillay, Quila and Litre which is really special one because the legend say that you have to do something every time you see them. As part of the secrets of the park we will find several bridges or viaducts which are there now hidden on the forest for a little bit more than 100 years. Finally we will discover one of the oldest works in Valparaíso “el carbonero” the person who make coals and if we are lucky maybe meet one of them, let’s try our luck!
