Behind the tour
Valparaiso is a famous old harbor known for his glorious time between 1850 and 1950 known as the golden time. But Valparaíso is much more than that, because the city is located in one of the hotspot for biodiversity in the world. The Mediterranean climate and the geography of this region give to this city and special surrounding with and endemic forest where some of this flora you will be able to find it only there.
As you will see Valparaíso offer a divers landscapes of forests, lakes, valleys and even waterfalls, but this forests also hide part of the history of the city when about 100 year ago in the middle of the golden time and the prolific development of Valparaíso they decide to build the second hydroelectric plant and the first one in Chile for a public purposes to give electricity to the city but mostly to the tram public transport. A that time was one of the biggest and most important engineering project in Chile, but in 1995 the plant was close due to the cost of its operation, and the owners decided to abandon the place. The ruins of the whole complex remained there but now the whole land belong to a real estate company, what have been bringing some problems to this area because since couple of year ago they have been building new neighborhoods and destroying the forest around without taking care about the natural and history heritage of this zone of Valparaíso. That is why this tour goes through the history, innovation, develop, nature and current situation of “Placilla city”.
Itinerary
We will start the tour meeting at the front door of the national congress from where we will take a local bus, this bus will bring us to a town called Placilla from where we will start our trekking route. The bus will leave us 400 meter from the forest. In this point we will enter to a Pine tree forest mixed with a Eucalyptus trees and native trees, this forest will lead us to a lake call “Tranque la Luz” an artificial lake built a little bit over 100 years ago.
We will walk along the lake and visit part of the facilities of the old hydroelectric plant. After this visit we will go into the native forest call sclerophyllous forest which will take us through a hill from where we will be able to watch one of the biggest waterfall of our region. Going downhill we will be visiting more parts of the facilities for the old hydroelectric plant and starting to have an idea of how the whole complex was working. At this part of the tour the adventure gets more exciting, we will follow the old pipping structure downhill on the valley to arrive finally in the second oldest hydroelectric plant built in Chile. We will take a break here to eat, relax and explore the plant and get to know more about their secrets.
